The Open Golf Championship was first played over this great seaside links course in 1954 when the legendary Australian player, Peter Thomson, won his first Open with an aggregate score of 283. Royal Birkdale has been the venue of many events including the Ryder, Curtis and Walker Cups, as well as six Open Championships. Great play has come with these events-the spectacular shot to the green from behind a bush by Arnold Palmer in his prime (now commemorated by a plaque) to win the 1961 Open; Trevino recording a seven at the 71st hole and still winning; and Tom Watson winning his fifth Open in nine years.
Linda Hartough is recognized as one of golf's leading artists.
